Derek Scafidi Current Event

Hilary Clinton has been in India the past few days this week speaking about how India has been doing well reducing its dependence on Iranian Oil. Hilary Clinton met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata and spoke about the United States relationship with India. She said that India shares the same feelings towards Iran. She also spoke about the feelings towards women, both in India and in the United States. She talked about the well achieved “quotas” for women and how well it has worked, and compared it to our nation, how excited she was to run for president, but had to drop out due to “the system being hard to navigate, for both men and women, but particularly for women.

Historical Significance between US and India:

"Well, India has reduced its dependence on Iranian oil. I know their refineries have stopped asking for orders to purchase Iranian oil. So they certainly have taken steps," Clinton told the CNN in an interview. And we have worked with them and offered suggestions about alternative sources of supply at an affordable cost," -Hilary Clinton

Question: Why do you think the United States wants India to reduce its dependence on Iraq for oil? Also, Why do you think that  the look of women professionally is different in India then it is here?

  1. I believe that the United States wants India to reduce its dependence on Iraq for oil because of the current relationship between America and Iraq. If another controversial event were to occur and American troops were again needed in Iraq, the United States would want Iraq to have as little allies as possible. As in World War I, when controversy emerges, allies are formed and usually enter war together. The professional look of women in India is different of that in America because of religion and social differences. People dress according to the social norms of their country.

  2. I think that the United States wants India to reduce its dependence on Iran for oil because they want to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. I think that the United States is taking this topic very seriously because next month a new US law will put sanctions on nations that buy oil from Tehran. I also think that the United States wants to decrease India's dependence on oil from Iran because India and the United States both share the same feelings towards Iran. In addition, I think that the look of women professionally in India look different than the women in the United States because they have well achieved "quotas." Furthermore, it was stated that particularly for women, the quotas are "hard to navigate" in the United States.

  3. I believe that the United States wants to reduce India's dependence on oil from Iraq because that will limit relations that Iraq will have with other nations. If this happens Iraq will not be as big of a threat to the U.S. Also the look of women professionally is different because of religion and social norms.

  4. Indias dependence on oil should decline because it will benefit the unites states by limiting friendly relationships with iraq. With war at stake the best thing for the u.s. is to keep Iraq secluded from other nations. This topic is very important because this could be a test to see if the same method will worl eventually with Iran. I feel that women are professionally different that women in America because of culture and social expectations.

  5. I don't think that the United States has stated that it wants India to reduce its dependence on Iraq for oil, but as for Iran, the United States seems to be trying to impose sanctions on Iran by using other countries. Perhaps the United States wants India to be energy independent, but it is more likely that the United States is using its alliances to try to impose unofficial sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear program (and relations with Israel).

  6. In India, women are bound by certain cultural restrictions, especially in historically Hindu areas where gender roles are more clear and immovable. However, India can be said to be more progressive than the United States in terms of women's progress because, unlike the United States, India has a female president and has had other females in positions of power throughout the history of the republic.
