Paige's Current Event

My current event focused on the new Native American Television broadcasting station. On Sunday September 25 the first Native American television channel went live in Los Angeles California. First Nations Experience Television broadcasts all Native American shows twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. FNX is the result of the San Manuel Band of Indians and KVCR an Inland Empire Public Broadcasting Service working together for almost seven years. The new multimedia plans to show entirely Native American authentic shows including news, storytellings, dramas, and childrens shows, according to their website fnx.org. According to one FNX spokesman the station will be "featuring authentic voices and stories reflecting the reality of the Native American experience and that of indigenous peoples worldwide" Within a year the station plans to expand to a producer of many genres which may include sports, feature films, and comedy. San Manuel Chairman James Ramos said in a statement. "Becoming a partner with KVCR supports the tribe's mission of eradicating stereotypes that often stem from inaccurate depictions of American Indians in commercial television.

Question: Other than eradicating many stereotypes that whites have against Native Americans, what do you think is the biggest change that this broadcasting station will bring to the San Manuel Band of Indians.

  1. I think this broadcasting station will bring a number of things to the San Manuel Indians. I think it will allow them to get the word out about what Native American life is like. It will be able to inform the world about them in another form, and will help them tell the true stories from their perspective. It will also let them get more "confidence" you could say in themselves. By doing this they are a step further in getting their rights recognized and getting them noticed in civilization. It will also provide jobs for the Native people because they need people to run a TV station. This will help many of them get money and oppurtunity they may not have been able to have in their previous situation before the station was made.

  2. One of the biggest and most potential changes for the San Manuel Band of Indians could be that their lives are becoming public. This is not necessarily a bad effect of the broadcast but it could take the most getting accustom to because a lot of Americans overlook the small number of Native Americans living in the US today, and they may not exactly know that the typical day and challenges are for them. I think that the publicity for the Native Americans is eventually, but not immediately, going to be a positive change because they could get the help and support from Americans today to help progress and keep their culture and traditions alive. This broadcast will also make Americans more aware of the Native Americans since they are catching up with technology and adapting more to society. I also agree with Maddie in the fact that it will create more jobs for the Native Americans which could help them out of poverty and also that it could change their level of confidence because they could be looked at more respectfully.

  3. I think that the biggest change that will bring to San Manuel Band of Indians will be awareness. I think that having this station might help people that are unaware; understand what “real” Native Americans are like. This station might break some of the stereotypes that Native Americans have acquired throughout the years. I also think that it will make people more attentive to the fact that Native Americans are all around and not just stuck on reservations like many people think. Although, much of Native American culture is preserved on the reservations. Also , like Paige said that this station will help create jobs for many Native Americans to be actors, crew members, etc. These increased job opportunities will hopefully decrease the amount of poverty in the population. “…featuring authentic voices and stories reflecting the reality of the Native American experience… “Will help people become more familiar with what Native Americans went though from their own perspective. This station will help make uneducated people more aware, and will create more jobs among the Native Americans.

  4. I think one of the biggest changes for the San Manuel Band of Indians will be that they could finally get help that they need. Once this is broadcasted, more people will see the effects of an Indian life and the difficulties one an Indian has to go through on a daily basis. The broadcast will become like an awareness tool for the Indians. With this occurring then Indians would gain profit and opportunity, things that haven't seen in a long time. This then can help the Indians have a better lifestyle because of the change.
